A sort of song quiz. (Warning: my musical tastes have been described as 'schizophrenic,' and all answers subject to change on a daily basis...)

Tangled up in Blue (Dylan)

2. A song you like with a number in the title
I am the One (Inon Zur)

The rest here )
lunadelcorvo: (Red Braid Gold Dress)
(I’m doing this because….well, because I have some weird fascination with these things.)

Can you fill this out without lying? (If I was going to lie I wouldn't do it, or just plead the Fifth; I’ve done it before.) And yes, I corrected the grammar in the questions.

1. What was the last thing you put in your mouth? Coffee.
2. Where was your profile picture taken? No idea; it’s a stock photo. The one I usually use was a selfie taken at my desk in the study.
3. Do you play Pokemon Go? No, I seem to have missed both iterations of the Pokemon craze.
4. Name someone who made you laugh today. I just got up, so so far, my cat, Widget. (I started this much earlier - I didn’t just get up at nearly five! LOL)
5. How late did you stay up last night and why? Not too late for a weekend. Though I did end up playing Brave Frontier with the kiddo a bit later than I intended.
6. If you could move somewhere else, where? Europe, most likely; maybe southern France, or possibly Florence. Then again, given the political unrest everywhere, maybe somewhere more…neutral, like Canada, or Finland.
7. Ever been kissed under fireworks? Yes.
8. Which of your friends lives closet? Well, I do count my kiddo as my best friend, so right here. And my ex is usually a friend (lol), so right across the street. After that, Aline is closest.
9. Do you believe ex's can be friends? It's hard, and sometimes painful, but yes.
10. How do you feel about Dr Pepper? Don’t really care; I rarely drink any soda at all, though if I do, it won’t be that.
11. When was the last time you cried? Probably yesterday.
12. Who took your profile picture? See question #2.
13. Who was the last person of whom you took a picture? My kid.
14. Was yesterday better than today? Don’t know yet, but it’s hard times right now, so tough to say.
15. Can you live a day without TV? Yes, I don’t even have cable.
16. Are you upset about anything? Personally, more worried than upset. More broadly, have you *seen* what we sent to Washington?
17. Do you think relationships are ever really worth it? Many are. Not all. Romantic ones? These days I have my doubts.
18. Are you a bad influence? I can be, in all the best ways.
19. Night out or night in? Definitely night in.
20. What items could you not go without during the day? Phone, at least one decent pen (fountain pen, of course), coffee, my kid, and either a computer or a good book.
21. Who was the last person you visited in the hospital? Ex-father-in-law, who will always be ‘Dad.’.
22. What does the last text message in your inbox say? “It seems like it would be.”
23. How do you feel about your life right now? Generally, I love my life, but there is a lot of uncertainty, both about my future and about the future of our society, so I’m worried.
24. Do you hate anyone? In an impersonal sense, the entire GOP. Personally, not really.
25. If we were to look in your inbox what would we find? Depends on which inbox, I have 4 spanning…7 e-mail accounts. In my personal mailbox, ads for sales on pens or books, a lot of political mailing lists. On my work e-mails, school related stuff - students griping, memos no one reads, stuff like that.
26 Say you were given a drug test right now, would you pass? Unless caffeine or chocolate counted against me, yes.
27. Has anyone ever called you perfect? Yes, and sadly, I believed them. It is amazing how damaging and manipulative such a statement can be.
28. Someone knocks on your window at 2:00 a.m., who do you want it to be? If they want to live, it better be someone like Alistair Theirin, Casavir, or Dean Winchester (or any of a few other fictional characters). Real people - just don’t.
29. Name something you have to do tomorrow? Enter grades, follow up on some e-mails, maybe tidy up a bit. Try to get some mental R&R.
30. Do you think too much or too little? Way, way too much.
31. Do you laugh a lot? Despite my worries, yeah, I do. Granted, a fair share of it comes from irony, sarcasm, dark humor, or schadenfreude, but a most of it doesn’t. Fears notwithstanding, I do love life.
32. Do you have any fears? Oh, yes: whether I’ll have work in any given future semester, whether I will ever be able to retire, growing old alone, never being kissed again, and a lot of fears about the kind of nation/world we are making for my son. Shit like spiders and the dark really start to look pretty lame compared to adulting…..

lunadelcorvo: (Elephant Artsy)
This is a meme where I was tagged with a random number, in this case 19, to write the said number of things about myself.

The person responsible in my case is cmcmck

I'll try to find things I haven't mentioned before which may not be easy.

If you want a number, please feel free to ask.

1. I am left-handed.

2. While I am sarcastic to my very core, and in many cases, something of a cynic, I remain a romantic at heart.

3. I have had an Eagles song trapped in my head for weeks now. This is largely because someone I am close to is pretty much living that song, but it's rather strange nonetheless.

4. I LOVE coffee, but really only flavored coffee, and then with tons of cream and sugar.

5. While I am decidedly not religious (putting it mildly!), I have an odd love for Catholica; obscure saints and relics and such. I have a Plenary Indulgence on the wall over my desk.

6. At least two major loves in my life have been completely fictitious.

7. My oldest scar, a gash on the outside of my right thumb, was acquired when I was four, and decided to use a chisel to strip the bark from the branches my grandfather had trimmed from our Russian Olive. I still remember it vividly, and I also remember that was when my grandfather decided it was time to look past my being a girl, and teach me to use tools.

8. I have two cats; a black longish-hair named Midnight (not named by me), and a tuxedo short-hair named Widget (named by my son).

9. Once I romance a character in a game, it is nigh unto impossible for me to romance anyone else; I honestly feel like I'm cheating.

10. When I realized I had acquired over 100 fountain pens, I decided it was time to sell some, however, in the process, I have acquired at least that many once again.

11. I recently managed to mangle the heel of my hand on a bench grinder while sharpening my scythe. (Yes, really, and it's not for a costume, either!)

12. I only ever eat coffee yogurt.

13. I am, still, sometimes uncertain of what I want to be when I grow up.

14. I refuse to grow up.

15. While not religious, I have a peculiar affection for Ganesha, and you will find him all over my house. (It was once even a running joke that I was guaranteed to encounter a Ganehsa pretty much every time I left the house....)

16. I have never read a John Green book, and likely never will. I find the premises of his stories to be pedantic and unoriginal, and fail to see the cause for all the kerfluffle. Harry Potter, sure. The Fault in our Stars, not so much.

17. I get a peculiar sense of pride when one of my son's friends or one of my HS/Middle School students is surprised that I get their geek references.

18. I absolutely hate cilantro. I'm one of those people for whom it tastes like foil-wrapped soap. Blech!

19. I still miss my mom.

And there you have it!
lunadelcorvo: (Default)
One of your scars, how did you get it?
Stomach, from a rather hack-job emergency surgery. Saved my life, barely. I regard it as a battle scar.

What is on the walls in your room?
My diplomas, an antique print of Henry Holiday's Dante on the Bridge, a huge print of The Accolade, a vintage plenary indulgence (yes, from the Vatican), a few vintage postcards from Florence & Venice, and my framed set of Dante advertising cards. (That's the family room, where my desk is. You don't have time for the whole house... lol)

What do you miss?
My family, my hometown...

Depends on how and why I'm angry; sometimes a punching bag, sometimes a video game, others just giving myself space to calm down and think things through.

Don't really have one anymore, but that's OK because I'm quite fond of the one I have.

Who is your famous actor/singer crush?
I don't really have one. My 'impossible crushes' tend to be fictional (game or book characters, that sort of thing)

What was your favorite toy as a child?
Aside from the ever-famous castle, I'd have to say a stuffed killer whale my mother made me. Back then you couldn't find one to save your life, so Mom stepped up, and Orky was born.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
Chocolate (you mean, they make others?)

What are your favorite color(s)?
Reds; especially rusty, orangey cinnabar reds.

How many wisdom teeth do you have?

Don't know; I'm a pretty easy mark for a tear-jerker, but I can't think of one I favor....

What is the little physical habit that gives away your insecure moments?
No idea; I'd guess probably posture, or maybe talking with my hands more than usual?

Do you know anyone famous?
I've met loads of them, but not really know well, no.

Are you spontaneous or planned?
Bit o' both

Who would play you in a film?
I loathe camera on me, but if I could get past that, probably the professor of Obscure Field that had the vital Secret Clue needed to solve the Very Important Mystery (bonus if I won the heart of the Dashing Rogue!).

What do you miss most about being a kid?
My family, I suppose. And summer vacation seeming like forever.

Are you happy with your given name?
Since I chose to use my middle name, yes. My first name, no I quite dislike it.

How much money would it take to get you to give up the Internet for one year?
If I had access to the tools I'd need for my work, and another way to keep in touch with those I love, I'd be fine with it.

History, culture, classics, sci-fi, lots of things. Never cared much for mysteries, and romances make me queasy, though.

If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Make sure my kid would be secure for life, buy a nice house (not some crazy mansion), and go on with my life.

What's your status?
Context, please? At a guess, how about 'dead sexy soon to be divorcee?'
lunadelcorvo: (Books - never have too many)
1. Favourite childhood book?
Tough one, because I had so many, and they varied by age. When really small, I remember Santa Mouse best, but then it was the Hobbit, then Watership Down, then the Prydain series, and of course Nancy Drew and…..

2. What are you reading right now?
Well, quite a few. More's Utopia, Eliade's Sacred and Profane (teaching those), Inferno (again, teaching that in Spring), Machiavelli: A Biography (for fun) and Black Swan Rising for lighter fun.

3. What books do you have on request at the library?
Amazingly, none at present!

4. Bad book habit?
Well, if it's something at all academic, I write in my books, like a LOT. I don't usually dog-ear, and treat them well otherwise. I do tend to keep them too long, especially inter-library loans.

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Also nothing, but then the semester just started, and I already own the ones I end up teaching. I also have way too may I have yet to get to!Questions 6-55 (yes, 55) under the cut! )
lunadelcorvo: (DAO Warden Shield)
1. You have 50 dollars in your pocket, what do you do with it?
Assuming a windfall of some sort, I'd probably either take the fam out to eat, or books.

2. What's the worst movie you've ever seen?
I don't tend to see movies in theaters, so if a movie sucks, I DON'T watch it. I've see the first 20 minutes or so of some real dogs on Netflix, but I (thankfully) don't have to sit through them, so really remember them. Last one I remember hating all through was Blair Witch.

3. Have you ever seen someone die?
Yes.

4. Describe a favorite memory.
Any of dozens of moments of my kid; otherwise likely holidays when I was a kid. (I guess I"m lucky - I have an awful lot of good memories to pick from!)

5. If you could choose one place on earth to live, where would that be?
Tough call - Europe, for sure, but hard to say where. Maybe southern France, northern Italy? Part of the culture/landscape and part for the history. Amsterdam is also appealing.

6. What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
This changes almost daily (I'm ridonkulously susceptible to brain bugs!) Right now, it seems to be Into Darkness by Mumford. Because my entire summer had a Mumford soundtrack, pretty much.

7. Did you have braces?
Yes, for most of high school.

8. What is the last book you bought?
Machiavelli: A Biography (Miles Unger) and Lust for Liberty: The Politics of Social Revolt in Medieval Europe (Samuel Cohn). Both from City Lights books in San Fran!

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy recently?
Not really personally. I do continue to despair over the political idiocy that seems to rule my nation….

10. What do you want most in life?
Honestly, pretty much what I have: a wonderful family, a great kid, the chance to keep learning always, a way to reach out to others and open some eyes in hopes of helping to bring changes….

11. Are you in love?
Always.

12. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
Both, for sure! I love a good novel (and I've actually been making a pony to read more fiction lately) but I read so much within my academic interests, which I also love!

13. What does your Livejournal name mean?
Oh, dear. Well, it harks back to a time when I was looking for something sort of spooky, magicky and mysterious. (Ah, youth!) By the time I got to thinking it was time to move on, it was kind of entrenched. And of course my DW name is my LJ name in Italian.

14. What kind of person do you think you are?
Wow. Let's see: arrogant and insecure by turns, creative, quirky, sometimes moody, embarrassingly liberal in most of my views, but quite old fashioned in a few others, to say nothing of aesthetically. Drawn to things that are unusual, odd, bizarre in wonderful ways, and sometimes either not affordable or not good for me. A hopeless romantic who is also a cynic. An herbivore who can't type, and an atheists who adores Dante and cathedrals. And, I suppose, something of a study in contrasts!

15. Do you believe there is nothing higher than human kind?
Not God, if that's what you mean. But I don't really privilege humans as being "higher" than other beings, so "higher than" is sort of an irrelevant concept for me. I do think that the greater good outweighs our often selfish human interests, and that the whole sum of life has far greater value than only that of humanity. And I suppose, if pressed, I subscribe to a sort of cautious and certainly non-sentient version of the Gaia idea - that the earth exists as a larger organism of which we are all a part, much like the millions of organisms that coexist with each of us. Maybe not what the question is looking for, but it's what I've got.

16. Which fictional character could you most see yourself marrying?
How long do you have? Top choice has to be Casavir (NWN2). After that - wow, too many to count, and no way to tell if they are wishful thinking or totally impractical (aside, of course, from that whole fictional thing….)

17. Name someone with the same birthday as you.
No idea….

18. Name an obvious quality you have.
Known for my long curly red hair, and I love it!

19. Do you have an all time favorite song?
Also subject to change, but currently, White Blank Page (Mumford & Sons) - oh, the feels……

20. What type of friends do you like?
The kind that I can go months (if not years) without seeing/conversing with, and when we do finally meet up/talk, it's like no time has past at all. (This was the previous person's answer, but it says it better than I would have, I think, so I'm keeping it!)

In other news, the kitchen is almost done, classes are off to a pretty good start, and I finally have a Dante course for Spring! W00T!

(*Did you know at one point I thought this was pronounced 'me-me,' and I thought it was because 'memes' were usually posts about oneself....)

So, triva aside, this is one of those "What do you call things where you live" language memes. As a northern transplant to the almost-mostly-sorta south, I tend to have an odd mix of linguistic influences. But these fascinate me, so I'd love to hear your responses, too!
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks.
Creek or stream, sometimes brook (never crick!)

2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called.
Shopping cart or just cart

Lunchbox

4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in.
Frying pan

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people.

Gutters & downspouts

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening.
Porch

By hand, point first, mostly flat, except for a little bend to keep the goodies from falling off. Not folded!

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Yard sale, garage sale, rummage sale (I use these interchangeably, with no real pattern I can discern)

19. What's the evening meal?
Dinner

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
Basement

21. What do you call the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places?

I took this 8 years ago - these are my answers from today; some have changed, and a lot have not.
Yet another fun & festive questionnaire.... I don't know why I like these dizzy things so much - maybe I don't have enough people to talk to..... maybe I just like to expound about myself waaaay too much! Anyway, here goes:

LOOOOONG Questionnaire )
lunadelcorvo: (Keys)
(I would have sworn I posted this a few weeks ago, but LJ does its crazy LJ stuff, and when I looked the other day, poof! Who knows? So my pardon if you've seen this before, and enjoy if you haven't!)

Comment on this post and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, on your journal. Other people can get lists from you and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

These are my questions from [livejournal.com profile] primitivepeople:

1. Pens - tell me why you love them.

I love pens (by which I take it you mean fountain pens) because they bring a bit of simplicity and elegance to something that has otherwise become a throw-away thing, especially now in the days of e-mail and texting. A Bic may be a bit less fleeting than a text, but only barely. A fountain pen is anything but fleeting. Filling, cleaning, caring for a fountain pen is a soothing ritual, and the richness of a good (not even necessarily expensive) pen makes writing a sensual pleasure. Not only can a good pen last one a lifetime, but it makes writing a conscious act, which (for me, at least), lends a bit of gravitas to not only my words, but even to my handwriting itself. And then there's the colors! I've lost count of the inks I've accumulated, but I have access to many times more colors than any ballpoint can ever offer. Add to that the fun of seeing how each ink behaves in a certain pen - the combinations are endless. Hey, anything that makes me itch to pull out a pen and write, even if it's a grocery list, has to be a good thing!

2. What's your favourite item of clothing?

Huh. I'm emptied to say that it's the perfect jacket I haven't found yet, but I guess that would be cheating, huh? I suppose I don't really have one favorite thing - I'm not really much of a clothes horse for one thing. I also tend to have 'momentary favorites,' which vary on my mood, the weather, and so on. Right now I'm digging a quilted patchwork Thai sill jacket, and a favorite pair of jeans, which are embellished with a sort of Indian-style paisley pattern up the outside of the leg. Give it a few weeks of the warm weather, though, and it will change again, I'm sure...

3. What author do you most admire, and why?

Wow, another one I'm torn on! I'm tempted to say Dante Alighieri, because of my abiding love for the Comedia- it's such a complex and nuanced depiction of the 'zeitgeist' of his time. I've only begun to get a glimpse of the depth of Dante's work, for all the time I've spent on it. BUT, even for all of that, I'm going to have to go with Orwell, for not to dissimilar reasons. Orwell's grasp of culture, of society in all its glory and its squalor, of humanity itself, may be unmatched in any language to date. That he didn't live long enough to comment on our own era is entirely our loss, and given Orwell's passion for truth, doubtless his gain.

4. If you could change one thing about the world, forever, what would it be?

If I could simply wish it so, I would ensure that every human being was taught and able to use reason, critical thinking, sound logic and evidence based thinking, and would, as a result choose to reject ALL forms of superstition, prejudice, narrow-mindedness, and ignorance. (Not reaching, am I?)

5. Revolution or evolution? Which is best for society?

Both in their proper place, I expect. Evolution is preferred I think, but, among beings conscious of the process, evolution takes courage, honesty, and active willingness to embrace change. Consequently, I think we often fail to evolve just when we need it most. And that's when revolution comes in. It's hard, ugly, and painful, but then again, so is evolution, just maybe in smaller doses. Maybe it's the difference between taking the bandage off slowly or quickly? In any case, we may be due for a bit revolution; if we can't gently shake out the tangle we're stuck in, we may have to yank ourselves out...

6. Tell me about the greatest holiday/vacation you've ever taken.

I haven't done many, but I suppose I'd say my 'seven-countries/28-days' trip to Europe back in high-school. Brussels, Rothenburg, Munich, Salzburg, Venice, Rome, Paris, London - it was amazing. Of course, 75% of the trip was wasted on my callow, clueless, teenage self, but even so I learned a lot, saw even more, and can't wait to go back. Next to that, my forays to Florida or LA. can't really hold up, though Panama comes close. At least I got a lot more depth from Panama, being all grow'd up and all….

7. What are you most proud of?

Easy! In order: My son, my academic career, all the amazing things my husband has done, and after that…. maybe my garden? Or, more like the fact that I've built it all myself. I'm also ridiculously proud of the fact that I can use a drill and hammer better than sot guys I know.
lunadelcorvo: (Default)
1. My user name is Luna delCorvo because it's Italian for Ravenmoon!.

Ok, that's probably not enough. Well, it IS Italian for Ravenmoon. But that matters because Ravenmoon (ok, "raven_moon"), is the username I've used on LJ for oodles of years now. It comes from back in my 'OMG, I want to be so uber-gawth' days (thankfully behind me - I look dreadful in black, really). Back then I wanted a pagan-ish, wicca-ish, goth-ish name for a blog which I started on Blogger, then moved to a webspace, then finally to LJ. I've considered renames SO many tmes, but it sort of stuck. Once I started on DW, I wanted something new, but not entirely, so Italian!

2. My name is not listed here because it's really distinctive, and I like SOME divide between here and RL.

Really, I rarely post photos of me, of my kid, and I try to avoid real names, places, etc. I don't always succeed, but I really don't see the need to plaster my real identity all over the 'net. After all, I started this thing (well, the LJ originally) to have a place that was apart from my life. I have IRL friends here, but I still keep this as sort of my 'other' place.

I will say, though, that my name is said (by my mom) to be Scots Gaelic, but I have always suspected there was more Middle Earth than Midlothian in my moniker.... However, one doesn't call mom a liar, and I love my name, so it's all good. (Though I sometimes notice those folks who are *really* into Tolkien look at me sort of funny....)

3. My Journal and Friends page are my username/'Voices in the ether' because what else?.

Actually, here on DW, it's just "lunadelcorvo | Recent Entries." Odd, I'll have to see where to change that. On LJ, it's ": : : R A V E N M O O N : : :" Not terribly original, but I like it. It has a sort of Charles Rennie Mackintosh look if you squint just so.... I had a subtitle, "Meus vita somnium quod umbra" (my life of dreams and shadows) but that seems a relic of those aforementioned gawf days, so let's leave that lie, shall we? The friends page is 'Voices in the Ether,' because really, that what we are out here, isn't it? And the idea fascinates me.

4. My default user pic is the one up there ^ because it's sort of me?

OK, maybe me as I really really wish I looked. But I have the red hair, and the medieval streak a mile wide... (I even ended up in a rusty-gold bliaut for Halloween a couple years back.) Let's just say it's an approximation of my inner self?

How about you?
lunadelcorvo: (Xmas Cocoa)
This one is easy! I have a few, but I'll stick to just a couple.

One: Bubble lights!
Two: Nutcrackers!
These two get combined as I put the entire collection of Nutcrackers on the fireplace mantle, and intersperse a pine garland with the bubble lights!
Mantle with our Nutcrackers and Bubble lights

Three: The antique ornaments I mentioned before. You can see a few of them here:
Closeup of some of my ornaments<
(Roughly half of these are antiques, with a quarter added when I was a kid, and the rest reproductions I have added over the years.) I am not showing you a snap from this year, as we decided to do a smaller tree on a table on account of the still adolescent (and therefore nuttier than normal) kitty. So only a handful of my ornaments even came out of their boxes this year. :( Nevertheless, here is the tree, if you're wildly curious:

Even here, you can see quite a few of the antiques, and Santa Mouse nestled in the branches!

I have not seen many other memes this year, except for this one, so I went looking for a holiday quiz. I found this one: Christmas Quiz: Novice Level

Wow, after the one on the seventh, I'm not sure I could come up with another one! So many of the things I treasure most, ironically, are things that either belonged to my family, or were given in far humbler circumstances. That's not to say that I haven't been given a lifetime of amazing and wonderful gifts for Christmas, I have. And of course, so many of them were handmade - one never thinks of it, but the things that are unique really are the treasures.

So naturally, my mind goes back to being a kid, and thinking of all the gifts I got as a child: a handmade leopard-print fur bathrobe that I wore 'til all the fur came off and it was up above my knees, the Orca (killer whale) plush that my mom made after her own pattern, because I wanted one desperately and they didn't make them back then (Oh, how I loved Orky!).

Then, on a slightly different note, was they year my not-yet husband gave me box after box of the most dreadful clothes! Truly trashy, pink-n-sparkles stuff; it was awful! I tried so hard to be...politic, all the while thinking he'd lost his mind! And he let me suffer through every damn box, trying to find something nice to say with each one. Then he finally cracked, and told me that he wanted me to be able to go shopping for myself since he wasn't sure what I'd like. So, he bought all this stuff, so I could return it and have myself a shopping spree. He figured that was more fun that just giving me a gift card - for him at least! I'm not sure I recall a single thing I bought, but I still crack up when I think of that rascal sitting there watching me squirm!

So I guess, when it comes to favorite gifts, it really IS the thought, and the love, that counts!
lunadelcorvo: (Xmas Cocoa)
Today's post, a festive holiday drink. I adore mulled wine (this one is delicious warmed up), and eggnog (sorry, I buy the premade stuff!), as well as eggnog lattés, but my favorite holiday drink is hot cocoa. I've seen some pretty sexy cocoa recipes so far this year (Nutella cocoa? *swoon*) but here's my own mix:

In a nice big mug (12oz at least) mix 3tsp sugar, 1 tsp cocoa (make it good stuff, like Ghirardelli, Godiva, or Rapunzel), a teensy sprinkle of sea salt (like 5 or 6 grains), a pinch of cinnamon, and a dash of allspice. Swirl it up so it's all mixed, then add one tablespoon milk. Mix it into a syrup consistency, then add milk to the top (leaving room for marshmallows, of course!) Heat as hot as you like it, top with marshmallows, and stick in a candy-cane. Toss on a light dusting of cocoa powder, sprinkles, or drizzle of chocolate. All you need now is a fireplace and it's Christmas in a cup! Enjoy!
lunadelcorvo: (Xmas-Noel Angel)
Well, I do a lot of 'crafty' things all year 'round, and December is no exception. I make my own wreaths, my son and I make snowflakes, paper chain garlands, and of course cookies galore! When he was little, and prone to grab anything shiny, we made dozens of salt dough ornaments for the lower half of the tree. (These may find a new lease on life what with an adolescent kitty in the house!) I even once typeset my own copy of A Child's Christmas in Wales which I sent out to friends and family. (Photos of some of these are below).

But my best-ever holiday craft was the German Christmas Boxes I made.
Xmas Boxes, printed, assembled and embellished with glitter Xmas Boxes
These are some of the Victorian Christmas Box ornaments I've made in past years.
.
I still use them, and I've sent or given many of them as gifts, too. So here's how to make them:

Start with a pattern (you can find one below).

You can trace this directly on to colored cardboard (foil or colored gift boxes from department stores are great for this, just flatten them out and voila!), you can use poster-board and paint, draw, or decorate them yourself, or you can do what I did and take the pattern into Photoshop and decorate it there, and print it in color on cardstock. If you want to use these for gift containers, you can put a tag on it when it's done, or leave a space for a name in the art on the cover. There's a preview of one of the designs I used below as well.

Cut out the solid lines, and score the dotted ones. To cut, I recommend using an X-acto and a metal ruler. To score, use the ruler and something dull, like the rounded tip of a butter-knife, a pointed nail file, out-of-ink ballpoint, etc. Anything to make a firm 'dent' in the cardboard along your fold line without actually cutting through it. Don't forget to punch holes in either side for the string.

If you want to do more decorating after it's cut out, like adding glitter-glue accents and such, do it while the box is flat. Once it's all dry, fold along your scorelines, and glue the tabs. You can use a teeny binder clip to hold the top corner, but you may just have to hang on to the pointy end for a few minutes until the glue sets a bit. Add a metallic cord or narrow ribbon, fill with treats or a small gift, and hang it on the tree!

I'm posting this from Dreamwidth, because LJ is AWOL - again. Grrr. I can't check, but I'm pretty sure that today's entry was another recipe, so here goes:

Kentucky Bourbon Balls (indispensable on Christmas and at Derby Time!)

Ingredients:
1 cup fine chocolate wafer crumbs (Chocolate teddy grahams or other chocolate cookie work well, too. Just don't use one with additional sugar on it, as it throws off the balance of sugar to liquid.)
1 cup finely chopped pecans (optional, or replace with chocolate mini-chips)
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup bourbon
1 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons light corn syrup (I prefer to use agave nectar, or even good quality maple syrup)

Also: confectioners' sugar or cocoa for coating

Preparation:
Thoroughly combine the crumbs, chopped pecans/chips, sugar, and the cocoa. Stir bourbon and corn syrup into the dry mixture; blend well (get in there with your hands if you need to; it's a thick dough!). Cover and chill for a few hours. Sift about 1/2 to 1 cup of confectioners' sugar on a cookie sheet. Shape small bits of the dough into balls and roll them in the confectioners'. Store in refrigerator in tightly covered containers. Make these a few days in advance for best flavor, and roll in confectioners' sugar again before serving, if desired. These can also be frozen for longer storage.
Makes about 3 dozen bourbon balls.

Today's post is my favorite holiday movies. So here goes:

1. A Christmas Carol (the one with Patrick Stewart, of course)
2. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer I still adore all the old Rankin Bass animated Christmas specials (The second Rudolph one, Jack Frost, Kris Kringle), but Rudolph is still my favorite.
3. A Christmas Story O.K., I know it's all trendy, but it is a lot of fun. It reminds me of Christmases when I was a kid in Milwaukee. And there's a wonderful local stage production that's become a tradition along with the Nutcracker.
4. While You Were Sleeping Only sort of a holiday movie, but I've always loved it. So, yes, I'm a romantic sot, so sue me! LOL

There are some others that I like, but those are the only ones I can think of that have become traditions. (Of course the second I post this and walk away, I'll think of others, I'm sure!)

I tend to be awful at the "must post something every day for x days' thing, but I'm all a-squee for the holidays, so I'll give it a shot. This post is the rules (which I will more or less follow, but I won't repost them each time). Next post will be the first day's post. Cheers and feel free to join in or ignore as you choose! The Religious Identity Test
Your Result: Humanist

You are probably a humanist. You approach the world from a natural standpoint, giving little weight to organized religion or traditional dogma and creed. You value reason and experience over superstition and supernatural beliefs. In identifying yourself, you would be inaccurate if you described your religious beliefs as Christian or as consistent with any revelation-based belief system.

Somewhat humanistic, with some supernaturalism

Your result for Awakening the Hero Within: Hero Archetype Test...

You are the Ruler

54% Innocent, 17% Orphan, 79% Warrior, 58% Caregiver, 71% Seeker, 75% Lover, 54% Destroyer, 79% Creator, 64% Magician, 83% Ruler, 79% Sage and 71% Fool!

Goal: Order, prosperity

Fear: Chaos

Response to Dragon/Problem: Find its constructive uses

Task: Take full responsibility for life

Gift: Responsibility, control

Addictions: Control, codependence

Rulers are realists who do not have the leisure to have illusions; they are integrated, whole and ready to take responsibility for loves. Rulers understand that his/her own capacity for harm is as great as their capacity for good, and take responsibility for his/her actions. The Ruler maintains life and governs it. The emergence of the positive Ruler archetype indicates some achievement of mastery in the world. At best, Rulers are ecological and find the best methods to deal with everything.

Shadow Ruler:

The Shadow Rulers feels a compelling need to control her/himself and others and an inability to trust the process. Control is wanted for its own sake or for power, status, or personal aggrandizement rather that to manifest the kingdom that would gratify us on a deep level. Shadow Rulers operate out of a scarcity mentality, believing that there is not enough so ‘my gain must be their loss.’ The Shadow Ruler emerges not because they feel we have too much power, but because we feel we have much too little. Often Shadow Rulers are substituting power over others for power from within the self.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Forget tolerance. Teach people how to think rationally, apply critical thinking, ask questions, formulate their own ethics based in reason not faith. Give them that, I suspect you'll find tolerance isn't an issue any more....

I know, it's been said all over my f-list. But given a wrangle I got into with a pair of particular idiots, I needed to say it again!
lunadelcorvo: (Medieval Scholar)
1. What faith were you born into or raised with (if any)?
None. I was raised by a lover of mythology, and two militant atheist/agnostics. ("I know it's all bullsh*t, and you don't know what your talking about!")

2. Were you devout as a child/adolescent?
Nope, not a bit of it. I wasn't even baptized until my folks decided that I would do better in a parochial school, as the public schools where I grew up were a little iffy.

3. If you are not currently practicing your childhood faith, what led you away from it?
Since I didn't have one then, I suppose I am still 'practicing' it now. I went through one very brief period where I tried to be Christian, as I was in a Christian high school, but that failed pretty quickly. (after all, in a family of atheists, how else does one rebel?) I have had a long and tempestuous relationship with Wicca/Paganism, and we ultimately decided it was best if we stayed close friends....

4. How many religious denominations, traditions, and/or groups have you belonged to?
Well, 2, 3 or none depending on how you look at it. There is trying to convince myself I bought the Lutheran spiel for a few months, my few years of a nearly, but not quite, literalist Paganism, and the rest of my life, which has been some flavor of atheism, agnosticism, rationalism, and maybe a tiny hint of deism once or twice. Add it up however you like!

5. How would you describe your religion now?
Well, I suppose I have covered that, but really, I don't have any, nor do I want one. I think religion and its myths and allegories are terrific tools for thought, meditation, teaching, and connecting. I do not, however, hold any of them as literal. I no more think there is a divine Jesus than I think that the sun is the wheel of Apollo's chariot. They are both really nice stories though!

6. How long have you been practicing that religion?
I think I really, finally, officially came out as an atheist in the last five years or so. But even my Wicca-ish leanings have been largely symbolic/allegorical in character for at least ten, maybe fifteen years, perhaps?

7. Do you pray? If so, how?
No. I meditate, and I sometimes take time to consciously redirect my mental energies, steer myself away from negative thought patterns/habits, and so on. I suppose one could liken that to prayer, via a sort of 'power of positive thinking' analogy. But I don't in any sense think there is anyone/thing out there listening, not do I feel the need to ask favors of an imaginary friend.

8. Do you practice magic? If so, do you distinguish it from prayer?
See above. Some people might call actively focusing their attitudes/thinking a form of magic. I do think that we are tremendously powerful in terms of the realities we bring about by our thoughts, acts, expectations, etc. There is nothing mystical about it, but we are the drivers, we choose the roads. Someone once put is this way: we steer our ships on currents we ourselves create.

9. Do you work with divinatory oracles like Tarot, astrology, the Runes, etc?
I love Tarot, and have a tremendous interest in Kabbalah. Tarot, for me, is like any mythic system; it can, at times, be useful to think of things within a structured language of symbol - but it has no power in and of itself. If there is anything to divination, it lies on our own ability to perceive the patterns we create by our actions, and the see the likelihoods they set into motion. As far as Kabbalah, my interest is much like it is in Tarot, with an added dimension of a rabid interest in medieval religion and mysticism.

10. Describe your personal concept of God/dess/Higher Power/etc.
Me. Every human being is his or her own god, there is no other, there is nothing outside the world to be feared, implored, or served. the highest good to serve is not some external entity, but the worldly good, he well-being of every human, of every sentient being, of all living things.

11. How does your religion/spirituality explain the concept of/presence of evil?
Depends on what you are referring to. Bad shit happens; lightning strikes, diseases mutate based on environmental factors, earthquakes result from tectonic stresses, etc. Nothing evil there. Humans can be altruistic, generous, loving, caring, decent, noble, kind. We can also be selfish, greedy, vain, cruel, and destructive. I don't excuse it, but I understand it as part of the human condition. I, personally, tend to think that religion exacerbates the negative tendencies, at least as much (if not more) as it augments the good ones. It's not the only thing that does so, but it's a biggie in my book. In terms of evil as an abstract concept, it's a descriptor of the antithesis or lack of what we consider good. Dark is simply the state of lacking light, evil is simply one way (and a somewhat poor one) of referring to the absence of good. But neither 'good' nor 'evil' are particularly precise or effective terms.

12. Is music and/or dance important to your path? Why or why not?
Music is tremendously important to me in general, as are many forms of art. Dance less so, but I enjoy it. Much of my favorite types of art and music are religious in nature, even. Part of my 'path? Well, that starts getting into some pretty big assumptions about the meaning of 'path' that I don't really want to spend time on here.

13. What is your concept of the afterlife?
Being remembered by those who survive you, ideally for having made a positive impact on the world, even if only a small portion of it.

14. Do you believe in ghosts, spirits, Faeries, devas, and/or other beings beyond ordinary perception?
I have seen plenty of things I can't explain, I know that. While I don't really believe in an afterlife for example, in some cases, ghosts seem to be the only explanation for some occurrences. I suspect, though, that however such things come about, it's simply a matter of us not being able to understand the mechanics of it yet. After all, at one point, a cell phone, an antibiotic, or the internet would have been utterly inexplicable, and could only have been understood as mystical. That doesn't take one whit of the wonder, majesty or numinousness out of the world, though. If anything, it's far more wondrous to ponder the intricacy of evolution, say, over simply assuming that because I can't quite wrap my head around it, it must have been "bibbity-bobbity-boo."

15. If you have children, are you raising them in your religion/spirituality? Why or why not?
I am raising my kid to think, to love and respect the world around him, to ask questions, to explore, to love to learn, to question claims that seem illogical, and to value facts as facts, and lovely stories as lovely stories.

Things I need to remember:
• Asking for help is not, as it turns out, fatal.
• Laughing is easier than pulling your hair out, and doesn't have the unfortunate side effect of making you look like a plague victim.
• Even the biggest tasks can be defeated if taken a bit at a time.
• I can write a paper the night before it's due, but the results are not all they could be.
• Be thorough, but focused.
• Trust yourself.
• Honesty, always.
