Today's question: 17 – Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day: Do you make New Year's resolutions? If so, how successful are you at keeping them?

Generally, no, I don't make New Year's resolutions. An age ago, I answered a similar question that I don't really care for making sweeping declarations once a year. It seems disingenuous and sort of show-offy. Instead, I try to always be self-reflective and undertake small, but meaningful and sustainable changes. I don't always succeed, mind you, but I try. Offhand, I'd say I have been more successful with this approach than when I have made NYE resolutions.

Same. I don't make NYR's. I try to aim for small changes, most recently the writing challenge I'm participating in (100 words/day).

I'm the same, as well. While for some it's been beneficial for them and their lives, I don't really see the point since, as you said, it feels disingenuous and not very realistic in a lot of ways. I do think people believe in the "new year, new me" mentality, and that's not a bad thing to hold onto mind you, but unfortunately a lot of times it fails because that motivation dwindles within the first few months into the new year. I do think having a kind of overall goal is important to keep, but it should be something sustainable and something you know can be achieved.

I used to try, but what I'd been doing the last couple of years are 2-3 year-long goals and affirmations of things I'd like to continue: declutter the house and reclaim spaces bow that I have a better understanding of what they need to be now. Write a little more frequently for myself than I did year ago; attend 1-2 workshops hosted by friends. Small things with big personal impact.

This year am trying something a little different inspired by a friend, because 2024 was jamhpacked with changed.

January is my free trial month.

I am the same, I don't make promises to myself, but I do make goals and plans. I write down a few things I want to accomplish. And it usually works!

Things I need to remember:
• Asking for help is not, as it turns out, fatal.
• Laughing is easier than pulling your hair out, and doesn't have the unfortunate side effect of making you look like a plague victim.
• Even the biggest tasks can be defeated if taken a bit at a time.
• I can write a paper the night before it's due, but the results are not all they could be.
• Be thorough, but focused.
• Trust yourself.
• Honesty, always.
