I'm the same, as well. While for some it's been beneficial for them and their lives, I don't really see the point since, as you said, it feels disingenuous and not very realistic in a lot of ways. I do think people believe in the "new year, new me" mentality, and that's not a bad thing to hold onto mind you, but unfortunately a lot of times it fails because that motivation dwindles within the first few months into the new year. I do think having a kind of overall goal is important to keep, but it should be something sustainable and something you know can be achieved.

Things I need to remember:
• Asking for help is not, as it turns out, fatal.
• Laughing is easier than pulling your hair out, and doesn't have the unfortunate side effect of making you look like a plague victim.
• Even the biggest tasks can be defeated if taken a bit at a time.
• I can write a paper the night before it's due, but the results are not all they could be.
• Be thorough, but focused.
• Trust yourself.
• Honesty, always.
