Well, that's just it - it's the sense of entitlement. And (at the risk of sounding like a pedantic old broken record), I really think that whole Christian 'take dominion' business plays right into it. Even before the overtly 'Dominionist" movement became a movement, Christianity (all the Abrahamic faiths, really) have this self important notion that somehow they are entitled to whatever they can grab hold of, and devil take the hindmost (literally!)

(I really need to make a long post about Calvinism and capitalism, because the whole Protestant ethos tends to lead to this idea of profit for profit's sake as some kind of mark of divine favor....)
