An interesting review. I haven't gotten to see the film, so I won't comment on it's particulars. From what you say, it sounds like something that could be on the History channel, its that far off from the facts.
I find most film makers are more concerned with making their own mythos rather than being tied to historical accuracies. The blurring of political and religious pogroms is a common error. But, in some ways it is a fuzzy distinction since political leaders are often religious and religious leaders are often political.
